Addictions are tough, but not impossible to break. With the help of 12-step practices, which focus on reinventing yourself steadily over time, and with the assistance of others on the path, no “external” catalyst is needed. In fact the whole gist of the 12-step approach is to wean ourselves from external stimuli. It’s a truly do-it-yourself approach, and therefore, I think, sustainable over time. Of course finding a power within that is (paradoxically) greater than oneself is also crucial. For help in the SF Bay Area, see awakenthruawareness.com.
