Stephen Colbert: The worst offender against Christianity is God

This is a must-watch Colbert clip. In it, Colbert addresses the Freedom From Religion Foundation’s anti-religion and pro-reason sign at the Washington state Capitol in Olympia, the resolution requiring the Kentucky state Department of Homeland Security’s to display a plaque claiming that “the safety and security of the commonwealth cannot be achieved apart from reliance upon Almight God” (I guess God was out taking wiz one early-mid September morning in 2001), rampant consumerism, among other things. One of those other things was how, in Colbert’s opinion, the worst offender against Christian faith – the one who fuels the atheist agenda and fundamentally undermines belief in God – is God.

The funny thing is that for Fundies, this message completely eludes them… they simply thing “bad things happen to good people because they are sinners – we are all sinners”… they don’t bother to ask if it is even questionably ethical for God to just sit on the sidelines. If you were to know that some guy in the room next door was raping a young 5 year old – you would do something about it (the very least calling the cops). If you said to yourself – well “that guy has free will so I can’t step in”, or “the little girl is a sinner after all since we are all sinners”, people would seriously call into question your cognitive abilities. But when “God” lets this happen on a daily basis as young children are sexually abused by the thousands around the globe every year, theists are able to come up with mind-bending excuses. Surely, if there is an ‘almighty God’ (calling into question you ‘agnosticism’), then he sure is one fucked up fucker!

Mark W., I’d like to respond in detail to your comment, but taking a quick look at this site I’ve stumbled onto, I realize I won’t get very far with my argument. I’ll just make one point: If you or anyone else was next door to a five-year-old being raped by some guy, you’d like to think you’d do something, but if you’re honest with yourself, if you knew the guy was probably armed, you probably wouldn’t have the courage to risk your life interfering. At the very least, you might call the cops, as you suggested. But by the time they got there, the damage would already be done, and at “the very least” the kid would be traumatized. Most likely, you (or any other honest human being) would close their eyes, cover their ears, and wait for it to be over. I won’t try to make “mind-bending excuses” for God, but what’s your excuse for humanity?
