Schism: A Muslim’s video response to Geert Wilders’ anti-Qur’an film Fitna

Barry Duke of The Freethinker writes:

“IT had to happen – a Saudi man has hit back at films criticising Islam in a Fitna-style video which portrays Christianity as a religion of violence.

The film, entitled Schism, was made by Raed al-Saeed. It splices together Bible verses and Iraq war images – including British soldiers beating civilians.

Other images show Christian extremists in America apparently encouraging children to fight a “war” for Jesus.

The film, which was posted on the internet last month, was initially removed by YouTube, the video sharing site. Mr Saeed complained to the site and it has been restored.

And quite rightly so.

Saeed said his film was not intended to outrage or provoke, but rather to illustrate how all religions could be depicted as preaching violence.

Said Saeed:

In Schism I have used the same methodology that Wilders has used and that involves taking texts out of context.”

I would have thought that, if that were his aim, Christianity was a bit of an easy target. Try Buddhism or Daoism next time.

It’s quite clear to me that that was not his aim – it was rather to simply hit back at the Fitna video using the same tactics. Not a wholly reproachable aim, but it’d be nice if he were honest about it.

IMHO he actually was honest about it. And Christianity is indeed an easy target… but so was Islam. Wilders rarely talks about anything else in the Netherlands.

I welcome Schism, because in stead of the protesting, flag burning, puppet burning, silly boycots and promise of violence from those in the ‘religion of peace’ towards Wilders and the Netherlands, one of ‘them’ used his right to free speech in the same way Wilders did; as intended. Saeed is an example for Muslims, showing one can respond to something like Fitna without the need to resort to violence, or without trying to evoke it.

Absolutely, I’m behind the video – it was just that one remark that didn’t quite sit right with me. I’m just hoping that this starts the public thinking about how absurdly easy it is to associate (predominantly the Abrahamic) religions with violence and injustice.

    GreyMalkin: GOOD POINT!

I also welcome he video. And while one can do this for any religion (even Buddhism by showing the riots in South Korea in the late ’90s) it should be done! The answer to free speech you don’t like is more free speech. It also illustrates that all religions are responsible for violence since they are based on irrationality (that includes communism). We should have a video like this for EVERY religion.

Too bad, though, they would use Nazi’s and Communists to portray the atheists… that’s just inaccurate. But I really wonder what book they would use? Origins of the Species maybe?

I THINK BOTH SIDES MUSLIMS AND CRISTIANS MUST NOT ATTACK EACH OTHERS RELIGION BY QUOTING SPECIFIC SCRIPTURES TO SHOW HOW VIOLENT IS THAT RELIGION.

SO I’S EASY TO MAKE A FILM SHOWING THE DEEDS OF SOME VIOLENT PEOPLE AND THEN CHARGE RELIGION INSTEAD.

Some Dutchmen still have their balls and sense of humor.
