Killing for Allah: Saudi religious police willfully obstruct schoolgirls’ escape from fire because they were not wearing correct Islamic dress

BBC News reports: “Saudi Arabia’s religious police stopped schoolgirls from leaving a blazing building because they were not wearing correct Islamic dress”. According to this story, the saving of 15 girls was prevented by the police—known as the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

One witness said that he saw three policemen “beating young girls to prevent them from leaving the school because they were not wearing the abaya (traditional black robe)”. The Saudi Gazzette quoted witnesses as saying that the police had stopped men who tried to help the girls, warning that it “is sinful to approach them”.

The father of one of the deceased girls said that the school watchman refused to open the gates to let the girls out.

Relatives of the deceased are reported to be enraged over the conduct of the Saudi police.

Many in the Saudi media have been very critical of the police conduct in this case. This media criticism is significant given its rarity. The religious police are so widely feared in Saudi Arabia that criticisms directed at them are said to be few and far between. According to the BBC, the police roam the streets enforcing dress codes, sex segregation, and ensuring that prayers are performed on time. Those who refuse to obey their orders are often beaten and sometimes jailed.

Another case of killing for Allah. It seems like it was just 5 days ago that I had written about a student in the Islamic World who was being sentenced to death on the charge of blasphemy. Oh wait, it was.

I just learned of the importance of double-checking publication dates. This story is from 2002… I feel like PZ probably felt a month ago.

I guess with all the suicide bombings there’s a shortage of virgins for the martyrs… Very distressing what fundamentalism can do.

  2. selittle says:

Again, I am left almost speechless. This type of fundamentalism is outright inhumane. I sickens me that our very own government will go out of its way to appease Saudi Arabia, and even call it an ally.

  3. Didi says:

This is a very old story – 2002.

Didi: Thanks for the heads-up. I just noted this in the post.

I wish I had oil. Then I could do anything I wanted, without fear of reprisal.

Well, oil or nuclear weapons. Either way.

  6. The real thing says:

Not only is the story old, it was the accuracy of this version cannot be confimed or vice versa. Having ingrained stereoptypes and frames of mind wiull not help issues. How many of us have ever bothered to atttempt an impartial study to understand Isla. Note: Islam is NOT equal to Saudi but predates it Try checking out

  7. Muhammad says:

Islam has to be examined. No liberal media dares to unravel the truth about Islam. Muhammad himself, a sex pervert, a genocidal maniac has made the world more crual than it was.
