Former Pakistani PM, Benazir Bhutto, assassinated
Benazir Bhutto, the first Islamic World female national leader was assassinated today at large gathering of her supporters by a suicide bomber. At least 14 others were also killed in the attack. The number of wounded people was not immediately known, but video of the scene showed ambulances lined up to take many to hospitals.
“All I can say is we’re devastated, it’s a total shock”, said Bhutto’s husband in a statement issued from his home in Dubai.
This was not the first time that Bhutto has been targeted by terror attacks. The day she returned to Pakistan after eight years of self-imposed exile, here motorcade was attacked, killing 136 people.
Morever, “This attack came just hours after four supporters of former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif died when members of another political party opened fire on them at a rally near the Islamabad airport”, CNN.
Thursday’s attacks occurred less than two weeks after Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf lifted an emergency declaration he said was necessary to secure Pakistan from terrorists.
